Taiwan puts 43 Viet labour agencies on blacklist

HANOI - More than 40 Vietnamese companies have been barred temporarily from sending labourers to Taiwan after Taipei threatened to stop receiving guest workers from the communist nation, state media said yesterday. The Taiwanese government complained that increasing numbers of Vietnamese guest workers were breaking their assigned contracts and taking up other jobs illegally.

Eight companies had their licences suspended for six months, while 35 others were given two-month suspension terms, the Thuong Mai newspaper said. So far this year, 79 labour-exporting companies out of the 150 registered firms have had their licences revoked or suspended or have received warnings.

The government has said about 50,000 workers will be sent overseas from Vietnam this year, with Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan the main destinations.
