Two senior officials suspended over corruption scandal

In implementing the Political Bureau's Directive issued on 27 May that
gives instructions on a probe into responsibility and involvement of
organizations and individuals, who are under direct management of the
Political Bureau and the Secretariat, in activities of Nam Cam's crime
syndicate, the Political Bureau-appointed party committee within the
Supreme People's Organ of Control and leaders of the agency held a
meeting on 31 May to endorse the recommendation of the Political
Bureau regarding Deputy Director of the Supreme People's Organ of
Control Pham Si Chien. Leaders of the Supreme People's Organ of
Control sent a correspondence to suggest the state president dismiss
Mr Pham Si Chien from the position of deputy director of the Supreme
People's Organ of Control.
President Tran Duc Luong signed on 31 May a decision to suspend Mr
Pham Si Chien from the position of deputy director of the Supreme
People's Organ of Control while investigation is being carried out on
his involvement in the effort to obtain Nam Cam's release. Also on 31
May, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai signed the Decision 424-QD/TTG to
suspend Mr Tran Mai Hanh from the position of director-general of the
Voice of Vietnam Radio Network while investigation is being carried
out on his involvement in the effort to obtain Nam Cam's release.
The party committee and leaders of the Vietnam Journalists Union met
on the same day to endorse the recommendation of the Political Bureau
to suspend Mr Tran Mai Hanh from the position of vice-president and
secretary-general of the Vietnam Journalists Union while investigation
is being carried out on his involvement in the effort to obtain Nam
Cam's release.
According the Political Bureau's Directive, Mr Tran Mai Hanh has also
been removed from the positions of secretary of the Political
Bureau-appointed party committee within the Voice of Vietnam Radio
Network, and deputy secretary of the party committee in the Vietnam
Journalists Union. Mr Pham Si Chien is no longer a member of the
Political Bureau-appointed party committee within the Supreme People's
Organ of Control.
In the meeting, the executive committee of the Vietnam Journalists
Union elected Mr Vu Hien, a member of the executive committee, to hold
the position of executive officer of the Vietnam Journalists Union
concurrently with the position of editor-in-chief of the Nha Bao va
Cong Luan Journalists and the Public weekly newspaper, and Mr Hong
Vinh, president of the Vietnam Journalists Union, to be responsible
for the Nguoi Lam Bao The Pressman magazine
