Vietnam's VNPT wants reduced telephone fees

HANOI - The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) has asked the Ministry of Posts and Telematics to start one tariff for its two Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks, Vinaphone and MobiPhone as of this month. If the ministry agrees, charges for a 30 second call will be VND850 for contract subscribers and VND1,500 (around 1 US cent) for pre-paid users throughout Vietnam in both Vinaphone and MobiPhone, instead of the current three areas with different tariffs.

The VNPT also asked for a 15 per cent reduction in charges for subscribers calling the same network (Vinaphone to Vinaphone) and a drop in fees of 20 per cent for users who call a lot. For long-distance calls, the VNPT suggested Vietnam be divided into two areas, instead of three. Under the suggestion, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in the first area, northern provinces, will be VND909 per minute, second and third areas, central and southern provinces, will be VND1,636 per minute.

For Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the northern provinces will be VND727 per minute and central provinces will be VND1,227 per minute. "The ministry will consider the suggestions from VNPT and approve them as soon as possible." Dang Dinh Lam, vice-minister of the ministry said. Meanwhile, the newly established mobile network S-Phone, which is using new technology Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), has applied one tariff for their subscribers.
