Woman and son die in Vietnam petrol station rape assault

HANOI - A woman and her teenage son died from horrific burns in southern Vietnam after reportedly being set on fire by a man who had attempted to rape her at a petrol station, police said on Monday.

Vien Ai Vy, the 39-year-old station owner, told police before she died on the way to hospital that her employee, Tran Ngoc Hieu, tried to sexually assault her after breaking down the bathroom door while she was showering. Vy said she put up a struggle. Hearing her cries for help, her 17-year-old son Tran Dien Lam came to the rescue but Hieu sprayed them both with petrol and struck a match.

Firemen rushed to the small family-run station in the Long My district of Can Tho province, and were able to save Vy’s one-year-old son from the flames. They took two hours to put out the blaze. Police said they were still investigating Saturday’s incident and were waiting to question Hieu, the alleged assailant, who suffered serious burns. Vy and Lam both died before they arrived at the local hospital.

Hungry Vietnamese 'eating pets'

A group of Vietnamese migrants who have lost their jobs in Malaysia and cannot afford to go home have reportedly started stealing and killing pet dogs and cats to eat. The New Straits Times newspaper said residents in the Kelemak industrial estate in the southern Malacca state have complained that their pets have gone missing.

Phan Ban Truan, 23, admitted he and his Vietnamese friends ate cats and dogs as they did not have enough money to buy meat, the paper said. ``We don't have money to buy meat. No food, we eat cats and dogs,'' he was quoted as saying. Phan said he and other workers wanted to return to Vietnam but did not have the money. The Vietnamese worked at a latex factory but were laid off after the company stopped operations, the newspaper said.

A Nepalese worker, Leka Darma, 26, said he saw a Vietnamese man using a piece of wood to bludgeon a cat to death. Lim Boon Kui, 64, a restaurant owner, said he lost two puppies and believed they had been eaten by the Vietnamese.Cats and dogs are popular household pets in Malaysia.
