Vietnam garment retailer to open store in Baghdad

HANOI - Vinatex, Vietnam's state-owned textile and garment giant, has drawn up plans to open a retail outlet in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a company official said Friday.

"We have completed all the preparation work with the Iraqi side and we hope to open this store later this year," an official in Vinatex's planning and marketing department said, requesting anonymity. According to the state-run Dau Tu newspaper, the project is part of the manufacturer's efforts to develop new markets for its products. Vinatex, formally known as the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Corporation, is made up of all state-owned textile and garment enterprises.

The sector is the communist nation's second biggest earner of foreign exchange after crude oil and is expected to bring in $3.8 billion (R23.14 billion) this year.Vietnam maintained close trading links with the former regime of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.
