Vietnam storm sinks boats
HANOI - Nine fishing boats sank in the South China Sea off southern Vietnam after three days of fierce storms, and one fisherman
is feared dead, state media said today.
Fifty-six fishermen were rescued after their boats capsized off the coast of Ca Mau province, but the coast guard was unable to find
one of their colleagues who was tossed into the sea. Strong winds accompanying the storms, which hit the province on Saturday,
also flattened 10 houses and blew the roofs off 19 other houses, the Tuoi Tre newspaper said. Much of southern and central Vietnam
has been lashed by heavy rain over the past week.
Seven people were killed and another was feared dead during four days of storms that battered Dak Lak province in the Central
Highlands from Saturday. Late last month at least two people were killed and 18 injured after Typhoon Koni hit northern Vietnam,
uprooting trees and power lines, and destroying more than 1,000 houses.
