Vietnam's sept consumer price index up 10.1% year-on-year

HA NOI - Vietnam's consumer price index in September increased by 10.1 per cent over the same period last year and 0.3 per cent over the previous month, according to the General Statistics Department. Nine out of ten groups of commodity listed in the index showed increases. The food-foodstuff group recorded the highest year-on-year growth of 17.1 per cent, followed by medical products-health services - 11.9 per cent. The lowest increase was 0.4 per cent in transportation and postal services.

The gold price rose 13.5 per cent from last September and 1.5 per cent from August, while the price of US dollar inched up 1.5 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively. September's price hike is blamed for increasing consumption demands for the Mid-Autumn Festival and the new school-year as well as the approaching wedding season.

According to the Ministry of Trade, the sharp increase in the price of food was due to higher domestic prices of rice for export to keep abreast with the world prices.
