Vietnam starts construction of largest seaport in Mekong Delta
HANOI - Vietnam's Transport Ministry broke ground Saturday for the Cai Cui International
Port, on 9 hectares of land and 10 hectares of water in the Mekong delta city of Can Tho.
Located in the city's Hung Phu ward, the port has a designed capacity of over 2 million tonnes of cargo per year.
The VND500 billion (US$32 million) project will include a 350 metre long pier and a 10 kilometre road linking
Quang Trung Street in Can Tho city with the port.
When construction is completed in mid-2005, Cai Cui Port
will help ease congestion on the highways and roads between
the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta, Ho Chi Minh City and Vung
Tau.
It will also help reduce transportation fees, and accelerate
development of the Hung Phu Industrial Park.
Initially, the port is expected to handle between 0.5 to 0.55
million tonnes of cargo per year, including 315,000 tonnes of
cargo from the Hung Phu IP.
The Vietnam Textile Corporation [Vinatex] has announced
plans to invest more than VND1 trillion on a textile and
garment complex in Hung Phu IP.
Can Tho authorities have agreed to lease 100 hectares of land for this project in mid-2003.
Cai Cui will also pave the way for the socioeconomic development of the delta, which accounts for 51 per cent
of the country's rice production, 52 per cent of total marine produce and 60 per cent of the country's fruits and
vegetables.
The Mekong provinces also account for 90 per cent of the country's exported rice and 50 per cent of its seafood
exports.
