Vietnam to host Asian cinema showcase hot on heels of Cannes success
HANOI - Vietnam is to host a five-day festival showcasing Asian cinema next
month hot on the heels of its success at this year's Cannes film festival, organizers
said Monday.
Films from 22 countries from Australia to Uzbekistan will be shown at the 45th
Asia-Pacific film festival which runs from November 15 to 19, Nguyen Duy Anh of the
Vietnam Film Department told AFP.
"This will be the biggest international film event ever held in Vietnam as more than 400
directors and actors from around the world will attend," Anh said.
Iran, Georgia, and Uzbekistan are to be formally admitted to the 17-member
Asia-Pacific Film Association at the festival which offers prizes in more than a dozen
categories.
Asian films more or less swept the board at Europe's premier film festival in Cannes
in May and Vietnamese cinema made headlines with the release of Dang Nhat Minh's
film "The Season of Guavas."
The host nation will enter five feature films, three shorts and two cartoons at next
month's festival.
