Russia plans to build nuclear plant in Vietnam

MOSCOW - Russian Minister of Atomic Energy Alexander Rumyantsev and Vietnamese Industry Minister Hoang Trung Hai on Friday discussed Russia's involvement in developing the atomic industry in Vietnam, the press service of the Russian ministry told Interfax. "Russian specialists might in the near future launch a feasibility study for the construction of a nuclear power plant with [water-cooled] reactors of the VVER-1000 type," the press service said. Russia's possible competitors in this project could be Japan, China, France, and South Korea, the source said.

"Russia already has experience working on nuclear installations in Vietnam. In particular, Russia was involved in modernizing a research nuclear reactor in the early 1980s," the source said. He recalled that in March 2001, Russia and Vietnam signed an agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy. Vietnam had earlier announced its plans to build a nuclear power plant. There are currently two institutes in Vietnam engaged in atomic industry studies, and 95% of their personnel were trained in the former USSR and in Russia
