Vietnam gives film go-ahead
The government in Vietnam has given
permission to an Australian company to shoot
a new film version of the novel "The Quiet
American", by the British author, Graham
Greene.
Correspondents say it's the first time that the
Vietnamese government has ever allowed a
foreign company to shoot a feature film in the
country.
The book portrays the last days of French
colonial rule in Vietnam and the beginning of
US involvement.
The official Vietnamese News Agency said that
the novel condemns the manoeuvres of hostile
forces and foreign aggressors against the
Vietnamese people. The first version of the film
was made in 1958, directed by Joseph C
Mankiewicz and starring Audie Murphy
