The Quiet American gets first screening in Vietnam

HANOI - The Quiet American, an adaptation of a novel of the same name by Graham Greene, made its premiere in Hanoi yesterday. In an encounter with reporters in Hanoi before screening the film at the National Movie Screening Center, Australian director Phillip Noyce said he had kept the spirit of the novel and only made minor changes to a few episodes and characters.

The two screenings in Hanoi yesterday were reserved for guests only. The crew will work with the local film studio Giai Phong tomorrow. Thang Long A Cinema in HCMC has been chosen as the first theater in the city to screen the movie on the same day. The film will be widely screened in cinemas in the city, such as Diamond Plaza, Fafilm, Thang Long A and Toan Thang, after December 25. With the setting in Saigon in 1952, the film tells the story of a tumultuous love affair between a foreign correspondent and a Vietnamese dancing girl named Phuong.

The film, starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser, has been tipped as a contender for Oscar honors next year. Sports and Culture Shareholding Co. has been authorized as the film's sole distributor in Vietnam. The film has been screened in the United States since November 22 and highly appreciated by spectators and journalists. Director Bui Dac Binh told the Daily he expected the film would capture great interest from local moviegoers. Of particular interest to some is the presence of Vietnamese actress Do Thi Hai Yen, who has the role of Phuong.
