Three university professors in Vietnam placed under house arrest

A court in Vietnam has sentenced three university professors to house arrest for inflating entrance exam marks for several hundred students Tran Van Dac, a former rector of the private Dong Do University in Hanoi, and his deputy Phan Van Hap, were each placed under house arrest for 30 months. A third man, Pham Van Chong, was sentenced to 24 months of house arrest.

The three professors were found guilty of inflating marks for more than 400 students who participated in university entrance exams in 2001, and admitting 2,600 students more than the state quota for the school, in exchange for money. More than 100,000 students take part in Vietnam's university entrance examinations every year, to compete for a few thousand places.
