Vietnam plans to export 80,000 tonnes of Pepper next season

Vietnam has exported 52,700 tonnes of pepper in the first seven months of this year (2003), earning 71.8 million USD, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO) in Vietnam. The Vietnam Pepper Association said that they plan to export 80,000 tonnes of the spice for 120 million USD in 2003, adding that pepper was planted on 45,000 ha this year, of which 34,000 ha are under harvest with an estimated output of 70,000 tonnes.

To achieve this target, the association has boosted trade promotional activities, including sending trade delegations to the European and Middle East markets. It will also grow 24,000 ha of pepper in the special growing areas while paying attention to processing pepper products for export. The association is expecting to process about 50,000 tonnes of pepper by the year 2004. Viet Nam's pepper currently makes up one-third of the world's total output and its black pepper export volume accounts for nearly 50 percent of the international market share.
