Vietnam police detain French journalist for unauthorized contacts

HANOI - Police in the former South Vietnamese capital of Saigon have detained a French journalist for making unauthorized contacts in the city, French diplomatic sources told AFP on Friday. Evelyne Pasquier of the Paris magazine L'Express, who arrived in the country on a tourist visa, was being kept under surveillance in a city-centre hotel on Friday morning after her arrest the previous evening, French ambassador Serge Degallaix told AFP.

Fellow journalists said she had tried to interview Vietnamese dissidents in the country's commercial capital, now renamed Ho Chi City. The French ambassador said Pasquier could be expelled from Vietnam in the next few hours. Her arrest comes as Vietnam prepares an array of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Saigon's fall to communist troops on April 30.
