State officials in Vietnam arrested over embezzlement scam
In Vietnam, two officials from a state-run company have been arrested for causing losses to government coffers of more than $US5
million in an embezzlement scam.
Police say the two, the chief techician and chief accountant of the transport ministry's Electronic Equipment for Transportation
Company, have been charged with deliberately breaching the law and misappropriating state property.
The pair allegedly falsified receipts and documents from 1998 while working on large government procurement and construction
projects, resulting in losses to the company of $US5.1 billion.
Police are continuing their investigation and more arrests are expected. If found guilty the pair could face lengthy jail terms or even
the death penalty.
