Vietnam's central bank defends new notes

Vietnam's central bank has dismissed rumours that it's planning to remove from circulation two new dominations of banknotes introduced earlier this month. Rumours had spread fast that the State Bank of Vietnam will have to withdraw the new polymer banknotes because they do not include the date of printing.

The bank says issuance of the new banknotes is a sound policy, and any individual or organisation who refuses to circulate them will face tough punishments. New banknotes and coins were introduced on December 17 to it harder for counterfeiters.

Durable, polymer banknotes made in Australia replace the paper 50,000 dong notes, the most widely forged denomination.
