Moscow to set up team to solve debt impasse
HANOI - Vietnam and Russia have agreed to
appoint a group of experts to solve the thorny issue of Hanoi's large
rouble debt to the former Soviet Union, official media reported on
Monday.
The Vietnam News Agency quoted visiting Russian First Deputy
Prime Minister Vadim Gustov as saying the group would first meet in
Moscow next month.
Russia says the debt, which mostly dates from the 1980s when
Moscow was the main aid donor to Vietnam, totals around 10.3
transferable roubles, but the two sides have been unable to agree on
the sum's hard currency value.
Gustov, who arrived in communist-ruled Vietnam last week, is
scheduled to leave the country on Tuesday.
Official media have said he also discussed trade promotion and
Russian interests in oil exploration during his trip.
