Milpitas agrees to permit flying Vietnamese flag
MILPITAS - Milpitas has agreed to recognize the flag of the Republic of
Vietnam and to allow it to be displayed at City Hall on ceremonial
occasions.
The Vietnamese flag has been officially displayed in such California cities
as Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Westminster in Southern California. San
Jose has also issued a proclamation recognizing the flag.
Pham Huu Son is president of the San Jose-based Vietnamese-American
Community of Northern California. He says his group is asking
communities where there are significant Vietnamese communities to
recognize the flag.
Raising foreign flags in Milpitas has generated controversy in the past.
People protested in 1990 when some Vietnamese-Americans raised the flag
in honor of Tet at City Hall. There was a similar protest four years ago
when the flag of the People's Republic of China was raised in a City Hall
ceremony.
