Four killed in Vietnam coal mine collapse

HANOI - Four miners were killed after a tunnel collapsed and buried them in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh, officials said Monday. The accident occurred on Friday while the four men working in a mine run by the state-owned Vang Danh Coal Co. in Uong Bi town.

"Four people were killed after being buried under the rubble. Their bodies were retrieved later that day," a company spokesman said. He refused, however, to comment on the cause of the accident, saying that mining authorities and police were investigating the case. Fatal mine accidents occur regularly in Vietnam, where safety regulations are often ignored in both public and private sector operations.
