ADB to loan Vietnam $975 million for 2004-06

HANOI - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Thursday it plans to lend Vietnam 975 million dollars over the next three years.

The ADB said its country strategy for 2004-06 seeks to reduce poverty by stimulating growth and generate employment through private sector development, agricultural diversification and good governance. The final allocation of pledged loans, however, will depend on the availability of resources and the country's performance, the bank said in a statement.

Since resuming operations in 1993 and up to the end of 2002, the ADB has provided 39 loans worth 2.5 billion dollars and 132 technical assistance grants totaling 92.1 million dollars to Vietnam.
