ITXC says inks deal with Vietnam's Vietel
HANOI - U.S. telecoms firm ITXC Corp said on Tuesday it had signed a
deal with Vietnam's Military Telecommunications Co (Vietel) giving it access to IXTC's
global Internet-based network.
A spokesman for ITXC, Josh Silverman, said the amount of the deal would depend on how much calltime Vietel logged on the
U.S. firm's network.
Vietel launched a telephone service earlier this year using the Voice Over Internet Protocol.
A statement from Silverman said Vietel was the fifth Asian carrier to sign a VOIP deal with ITXC, following Korea Telecom
and China Telecom in 1999 and China Jitong and Philippine Long Distance Telephone in 2000.
Vietel is one of four state-run telecoms firms and its service is currently limited to domestic VOIP calls.
Last month, Vietnam's state media reported the government had approved a plan to scrap the state monopoly in the telecoms
sector by opening up to 50 percent of the market to new businesses by 2010.
