Vietnam works out Internet development plan for 2001-2005 period
HANOI - Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan
Van Khai approved an Internet development plan for the country in
the 2001-2005 period on Friday, Vietnam News Agency reported
Saturday.
The move is aimed at speeding up the application of the
Internet in every activity of the country's economy, culture,
society, security and defense.
To achieve the goal, the plan has development targets ensuring
that all research institutes, universities, colleges and
vocational training schools will connect to the Internet in the
2002-2003 period.
There will be 1.3-1.5 Internet subscribers per 100 people and
the number of Internet users will be between four and five percent
by 2005.
By the year 2005, around 50 percent of high schools, 100
percent of central hospitals and more than 50 percent of
provincial hospitals will be connected to the Internet.
The plan also aims to provide all ministries, branches, state
administrative agencies, provincial and district administrations,
as well as the government's officials and employees, with access
to the Internet.
In addition, the plan will increase competition among Internet
service providers, targeting between 3-5 Internet exchange points
(IXP) and 30-40 Internet service providers (ISPs) in the country
by 2005.
