Monthly income of Vietnamese employees up

HANOI - Vietnamese employees in the state-runeconomic sector earned an average of 968,500 Vietnamese dong (VND)(63.3 US dollars) a month in the first half of this year, a year-on-year increase of 8.6 percent, according to a latest report of Vietnam General Statistics Office. The staff of national level state-owned enterprises (SOE's) received some 1.28 million VND (83.7 dollars) a month while those of provincial and city level SOE's received 742,000 VND (48.5 dollars), up 11.2 percent and 4.6 percent respectively.

Monthly incomes of more than 1 million VND (65.4 dollars) were received by many sectors, namely the banking with 1.86 million VND(121.6 dollars), up 41 percent; electricity and water, 1.85 million VND (120.9 dollars), up 21.9 percent; mining, 1.75 million VND (114 dollars), up 15.3 percent; transport and communications, 1.68 million VND (109.8 dollars), up 8.5 percent; investment consultant, 1.58 million VND (103.2 dollars), up 13.8 percent; and the processing industry, 1.07 million VND (69.9 dollars), up 8.1 percent.

Vietnam's excellent economic performance in recent years has delivered a substantial reduction in poverty and a major increase in both income and overall quality of life, a report of Vietnamese Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (MOSTE) said. Between 1992 and 2000, the country's poverty rate fell over 50 percent, from 30 percent in 1992 to just 14 percent in 2000.

The poverty line was previously defined as the subsistence level in food, but by the end of 1999, the Vietnamese government raised the bar after the encouraging results in poverty reduction.
