Vietnam's population to hit 118 m

HANOI - Vietnam's population is predicted to rise to 117.7 million people by 2050 from its current 82 million, a population official said Tuesday. During 2004, the population of Vietnam reached 82 million and in a decade there will be 94 million people in the country, according to Ngo Khang Cuong, director of the information department of the National Committee for Population, Family and Children.

"Thanks to well organised propagandising and propagating activities among people on population and family planning, growth has decreased in 2004," the director said. "It still remains at high level." With around 1.2 million people born in 2004, the population growth rate was 1.44 per cent, compared to the 2003 rate of 1.47 per cent, the official said. Vietnam is currently the second most populated country in Southeast Asia after Indonesia, Cuong said. The average life expectancy for men in Vietnam is 66.9 and for woman 71.6 years, he added.
