Gibson to star in Vietnam war drama
Mel Gibson is preparing to return to battle as
the star of a gritty film about the first major
conflict between US and Viet Cong troops in
the Vietnam war.
According to the trade magazine, Variety,
Gibson is in final negotiations with screen
writer/director, Randall Wallace, to star in the
movie with the working title of Lost Patrol.
Gibson's last on-screen battlefield was the
1995 Scottish epic, Braveheart, which won
him an Academy Award for best director.
Wallace also wrote the screenplay for Braveheart.
Lost Patrol is based on the novel, We Were Soldiers Once... and Young,
which details the perilous mission of 400 American soldiers who
parachuted behind enemy lines and were surrounded by 2000 Viet Cong
troops in 1965.
According to Variety, in addition to headlining the film Gibson's company,
Icon Productions, will also finance the movie.
This year has been one of the busiest of Gibson's career with his starring
roles in The Patriot, What Women Want, The Million Dollar Hotel and
the animated hit, Chicken Run.
Filming of Lost Patrol could begin as early as March next year.
