Ford opens factory in Vietnam
The Ford motor company has opened its first assembly plant in Vietnam.
The one-hundred million dollar joint venture will initially manufacture
commercial trucks and minibuses, before turning to cars later.
Ford's vice-chairman, Wayne Booker, said at the opening ceremony in Hai
Duong, about fifty kilometres east of Hanoi, that the Vietnamese tradition
of importing cars could be a problem for manufacturers if it was left
unchecked.
Correspondents say the large influx of used vehicles has deterred other
foreign carmakers from investing in Vietnam.
