Floods kill nine in central Vietnam, destroy homes
HANOI - Fresh floods triggered by heavy rain in the
central province of Quang Binh killed nine people and
destroyed thousands of homes, official media reported
Wednesday.
The Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper said 34,427 houses in
Quang Binh had collapsed, while 12,000 acres of vegetable and
sugarcane plantations had been damaged in the floods in the
past few days.
Quang Binh lies well north of Vietnam's key coffee growing
region and main rice fields.
The fresh flooding in Quang Binh followed Tropical Storm Eve,
which killed several people early last week in central coastal
provinces.
In a separate report, the Lao Dong newspaper said Eve caused
damages worth 50 billion dong ($3.57 million).
Water levels in central Vietnam rivers were still dangerous from
the recent rains, the paper added.
Vietnam's central coastal provinces were badly hit by storms
and floods last year that killed 397 people. - ($1 - 13,997 dong)
