Dengue fever kills more people in Vietnam

HANOI- As of July 19, dengue fever claimed 50 lives in Vietnam, a year-on-year increase of nearly 100 percent. The disease also affected a total of 31,700 local residents in the period, doubling the figure in the same period last year, according to local newspaper Youth on Tuesday. Most of dengue fever sufferers and deaths are from the country's southern region, whose weather is most favorable for the development of mosquitoes that are the main transmitter.

The main reasons for the severer outbreak of dengue fever are sudden climatic changes and impacts of the disease's outbreaks in other regional countries. To deal with the situation, the Ministry of Health has just launched an urgent program on dengue fever prevention nationwide, called for local health agencies to promote information campaigns among residents, and supplied localities with more mosquito-killing chemicals, medicines and equipment. Vietnam reported 35,073 cases of dengue fever infections, including 58 fatalities last year, up 48 percent and 45 percent against the previous year, respectively.
