More Vietnam private farms are reported

HANOI - Private farms in Vietnam now outnumber the old Communist cooperatives, according to the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

There are now 60,000 private farms worth more than $516 million in Vietnam, employing 400,000 people who produce $322 million worth of products, the Vietnam News reported Monday. The Ministry of Agriculture said the worth of private farms is about double the worth of the decades-old agricultural cooperative network, Vietnam News reported.

"Farm owners have made the most of their arable land, labor and capital to enrich themselves and the wider community," said Nguyen Phuong Vi, director of the ministry's cooperatives and rural development department."It was just as important that private farms had generated thousands of stable jobs for seasonal workers and contributed to the fight against hunger and poverty in rural areas."

The private farm owners have been better able to respond to changing market demands through their diverse operations and economic efficiency, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
