Reunification and May Days marked nationwide

A grand meeting was held in Hanoi on April 29 to mark Vietnam's Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day. Among those present were former Party General Secretaries Do Muoi and Le Kha Phieu, former State President Le Duc Anh, Politburo member and Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Truong Quang Duoc, Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Ideology and Culture Nguyen Khoa Diem, Politburo member and Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Phu Trong, President of the Presidium of Fatherland Front Central Committee Pham The Duyet, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem and other leaders and revolutionary veterans .

Speaking at the meeting, Cu Thi Hau, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Trade Union said "Celebrating these events reminds us of our glorious historical traditions and as well as funning patriotism A meeting was also held in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the liberation of the south, national reunification and May Day. The city's Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Minh Triet and People's Committee Chairman Le Thanh Hai were present at the meeting.

Chairman of District 9 People's Committee Le Thanh Dai addressed the meeting saying the April 30 victory has raised Vietnam's status on the international arena and encouraged the Vietnamese people to bring into play the strength of their whole nation in stepping up the process of national industrialisation and modernisation. District 9 was chosen as the venue of the meeting because as a newly-established district, it has always met or surpassed the targets set for economic, cultural and social development. The district has completed a water supply network for remote wards, built anew and upgraded a total of 44 schools and reduced its poverty rate to 3.3%.

Meetings were also held in Can Tho, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ca Mau, Haiphong, Quang Tri and other localities to mark the days. Earlier on April 28, a function was held in Moscow to mark the Reunification Day by the Russia- Vietnam Friendship Association. P Svetov, member of the association presidium praised the liberation of southern Vietnam as opening a new page in history.
