EdF says Vietnam's Phu My power plant building to start after september
HO CHI MINH CITY - Electricite de France official Richard Perrier said construction of the Phu My
2-2 combined gas-steam plant will start once the finance has been arranged in
September.
EdF has been involved in six projects at the Phu My site near Ho Chi Min
City since 1995. EdF hold 56.25 pct in the MECO joint venture company
running the project, with Sumitomo Corp holding 18.125 pct and Tokyo
Electric Power Co Inc (TEPCO) 15.526 pct.
The station is expected to begin operations in 2004, and will be supplied
by PetroVietnam with natural gas from the Nam Con Son field, developed by
BP PLC.
MECO officials said gas supplies have been guaranteed for the 20 years
of the concession, after which it will transfer to Vietamese state control.
The project will cost 400 mln usd, of which 25 pct will be funded by the
developers.
EdF's Perrier said electricity demand in Vietnam is expected to rise 12-14
pct a year, and the company is seeking opportunities to expand its
investments.
He said that by 2010, the country expects to increase production capacity
by 10,000 megawatts, mainly through stations fuelled by the souther gas fields,
he said.
Former Ministry of Energy official Nguyen Van Chung said the ministry
aims to raise capacity to 40,000 MW in 20 years' time from 5,400 today.
He said the scheme could involve a feasibility study for the construction of
a 1,000 MW nuclear power plant.
Currently, 85 pct of the population is connected, but power cuts are
frequent, even in major cities.

Vietnam starts construction of thermo-power plant in northern province
LANG SON - Construction of a thermal power plant, capacity 100
MW, started in northern mountainous Lang Son province on 2 April in the
presence of Minister of Industry Dang Vu Chu.
The 119-million dollars project is designed to generate 645m KWh for the
national grid with an annual turnover of 27m dollars. The project is expected
to test-run the first turbine 24 months from now and the second and last
turbine in the next 27 months.
Once completed, the plant in Na Duong township of Loc Binh district will
consume 525,000 tonnes of high sulphurous coal and 187,200 tonnes of
limestone a year. The project has led to an expansion of the nearby Na Duong
coal mining field to an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes and an investment in
a limestone mine with an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes. The thermal
electricity- coal limestone complex is expected to earn 36.6m dollars a year,
generating more jobs and contributing to the economic development in the
remote mountainous province of Lang Son.
