Cambodia signs border delineation agreement with Vietnam
PHNOM PENH - Vietnam and Cambodia signed an
agreement on Friday on the technical aspects of delineating
their joint border, a sensitive political issue among
Cambodians who traditionally fear encroachment by their
much larger eastern neighbour.
A preliminary agreement was signed in Ho Chi Minh City in
Vietnam, but Friday's agreement to iron out details required
a week of tough negotiating, according to Cambodian
officials. "I believe that, based on the morality of friendship
and solidarity and the cooperation of our two countries, the
border dispute will be ended soon," said Long Visalo,
Under Secretary of State for Cambodia.
He said that maps used to mark the border, drafted by
France, which was the colonial master of both countries,
were incomplete and inadequate.
Nguyen Van Hanh, Vietnam's deputy chief of the joint
border committee, said the meetings were fruitful and could
lead to the end of disputes over the frontier.
