Vietnam executes woman convicted of circulating fake currency
HANOI - Vietnam executed a woman convicted of circulating counterfeit Vietnamese currency, an official said Wednesday. Tran Thi My Ha, 31, stood before a firing squad early Tuesday in central Quang Nam province, some 850 kilometers (530 miles) south of Hanoi, said Pham Van Xu, a provincial People's Court official.
Ha was convicted of circulating 1.45 billion dong (US$92,350; euro71,197) in fake currency between 2000 until she was arrested in May 2002, Xu said. Her plea for clemency was rejected by President Tran Duc Luong in October, he said.
Vietnam is considering revising its capital punishment laws to put them more in line with other countries. Officials have said economic crimes may be eliminated from the list of offenses punishable by death, which now includes everything from drug trafficking to fraud.
