Two women charged with cross-border human trafficking

KIEN GIANG - Police in southern Kien Giang province have decided to prosecute two people involved in trafficking in women and children across the border. The traffickers are Tran Thi Huong, 45, a resident of Dong Hung hamlet of Tan Hiep district town, and Nguyen Thi Yen, 46, living in Tan Hiep B commune, Tan Hiep district. Huong, who is a usurer at Tan Hiep market, and Yen, who is a scrap-iron dealer, had become involved in human trafficking in collaboration with Ngoc, the owner of a brothel, situated 7 km from Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh.

On November 5, 2002, the traffickers sold three local girls to Ngoc's brothel, where they have worked as prostitutes for 18 hours per day. After that, they sent two more girls also from Tan Hiep district to the brothel owner. This is the second human trafficking ring uncovered by Kien Giang police. The first was broken up on September 23 when the provincial police arrested Pham Thi Deo, 45, and Nguyen Thi Tu, 48, residing in An Bien district. They had deceived nine girls (mostly teenagers) and sold them in Cambodia at a cost of 100 USD each.
