Grand craft show
The HCM City Export Exhibition & Trade Fair 2002 (Expo 2002)
offers a good chance for visitors to view a wide variety of
distinctive Vietnamese handicrafts. The expo attracted 40,000
visitors. Some 300 MOUs and 40 contracts were signed.
According to the HCM City Service of Trade,
the fair organizer, handicrafts were the
dominant exhibits during the Expo 2002 held in
HCM City from October 8-14. Of the 225
business exhibitors, 145 showcased
handicraft products used for home d‚cor or as
gifts. Following are some interesting products:
Mimosa perfume bags: The perfume comes
with six varieties contained in bags of various
designs. The bags can be hung as
decorations in the home and the perfume can
repel insects and last for six months. The
producer is Ca Dao Company. Kitchen
decorations: Visitors to the Expo 2002 could
see a wide range of gifts, interior decorations
and kitchen utensils with various designs.
One new product was fruit forks with seasonal designs made by Vinh Phu
Company. The forks are exported to Japan, Taiwan, America and
Europe. They are available at 286A Lanh Binh Thang Street, District 11,
HCM City.
ABC furniture: The furniture made by A Chau Construction have classic
designs with both Asian and European features. They are only made to
order. The company's address is Road 3, Lot IV-16, Tan Binh Industrial
Park, HCM City.
Children toys: Wooden toys of various designs aimed to help develop
children's mind. The toys are made by SD Wooden Toy Company (448A
Ap Bac St., My Tho City, Tien Giang Province). Also available are
wooden flower pots, boats, pen holders and ashtrays.
Rattan handicrafts: Rattan handbags, trays, flower pots, and CD and
floppy disk boxes made by Phu Thinh Company. The products, mainly
for export, are available at Miss Ao Dai (14 Nguyen Trung Ngan Street,
15 Nguyen Trung Truc Street, District 1) and Tan Son Nhat Airport.
Smoked bamboo items: The bamboo is treated and smoked to give a
brown color with different tints. Some new products are smoked bamboo
decoration lamps, trays and shelves. The products of Truong Son
Company are available at 32 Tran Hung Dao Street, District 1 and the
Expo 2002.
Glass tables: Float glass items of various designs such as tables, doors,
partitions and cupboards. The products, made by Phu Phong Company
(40 Nguyen Cu Trinh Street, District 1, HCM City), have high safety and
pressure bearing features.
Crafts of different materials: Furniture, cupboards, trunks, trays, hand
bags, vases and decoration lamps made of banana and water hyacinth
sheaths. The products from Thang Long Arts Company (Artex Thang
Long, 778/27-29 Nguyen Kiem Street, Phu Nhuan District, HCM City) are
mainly exported to Japan, Europe
and America. Handicraft export in
the first nine months rose 45%
year-on-year to US$245 million.
The figure for the whole year is
estimated to reach US$310-320
million, a 36% increase over last
year.
According to local exporters,
exports
to major markets such as Japan and the U.S. have shown signs of
recovery while other markets like Taiwan, China, Italy and France have
resumed the import of Vietnamese handicrafts. Exports to Hong
Kong, South Korea and
some Asian countries have
also increased. The
handicraft industry's sales
target for this year is US$300
million. The industry expects
to earn US$900 million-US$1
billion from export by 2005
and US$1.5 billion by 2010.
