Vietnam to reduce international call charges to woo investors
Vietnam will further reduce international call
charges, which are among the world's highest, in
April in a bid to ease business costs for foreign
investors, state media says.
Do Trung Ta, the minister of post and telecommunications,
says international call fees would be "strongly reduced" from
April 1.
He also announced charges for some overseas calls had
already been reduced by between 10 and 20 per cent from
January 1, the Thanh Nien newspaper reports.
Vietnam lowered international telecoms charges by 15 to 20
per cent in July in a bid to woo foreign investors, who have
long complained about overly-high telecoms charges and
warned they are a deterrent to future investment.
The tariff reductions have been made possible by the splitting
of the state-run Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp
(VPT) in October 2001 into its two component parts, freeing
its telecoms unit from the burden of subsidising the postal
service.
