Japan invests in Vietnam's telecom development
HANOI - A project funded by the Japanese Government has fitted out a Vietnamese training center with $2.4 million worth of
telecommunications training equipment.
The beneficiary is state-owned telephone company, the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).
According to Vietnamese news service VNS, the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA) has provided a VNPT
training center with $2.4 million worth of optical cable and digital transmission technology.
The Japanese Government-sponsored JICA-PTTC1 project also includes training support, workshops and telecom industry
expert exchange programs.
At the end of December 2000, VNPT had 2,256,255 fixed telephone lines in operation, 730,155 cellular subscribers and
60,826 Internet users. Penetration of all telecom services in Vietnam remains low.
