Construction of Can Tho bridge starts

A project to build ever-largest transport facility, Can Tho bridge, started on April 9 with construction of 11-hectare residential quarters in Mekong-delta Can Tho province. The quarters are built on both sides of the bridge, Can Tho and Vinh Long provinces, for 275 households who are living within the Can Tho bridge area. Construction of these quarters are expected to be completed in four months. Then comes the building of the bridge expected to begin in June 2002 and to be completed in late 2006.

Can Tho bridge project is to cost JPY 38 billion (roughly US $306 million) funded by the Japanese government as non-refundable aid. The 2,750 metre long and 23.1 metre wide bridge across the Hau river has four lanes for vehicles. The bridge on national backbone Highway 1A will help solve traffic jams and facilitate social, economic and cultural development in the southern side of the Hau river and the Mekong delta as a whole.
