Vietnam close to signing Brazilian coach for national team

HANOI - Vietnam is close to signing a Brazilian to coach its national team after the previous leading candidate signed with Indonesia, Vietnam's Football Federation said Friday. Edson Tavares, 47, has been invited to visit Vietnam next week to finalize all remaining contract issues, said Tran Duy Ly, the federation's executive vice president.

``We have agreed on the major terms of the contract,'' Ly said. ``We hope to sign the contract soon to prepare the national team for the World Cup qualifiers and Tiger Cup.'' VFF's leading candidate, former England striker Peter Withe, on Wednesday signed a four-year contract to coach the Indonesian team worth a reported monthly salary of at least US$14,000. Ly said the VFF will offer Tavares a two-year contract.

Tavares coached the Vietnamese national team for about two months in 1995, but left after differences with the soccer federation. He formerly coached China's Chongqinh Lifan and is currently coaching a Brazilian team. Vietnam has been led by six foreign coaches since 1995, helping the communist country build one of the top three teams in Southeast Asia.
