"Apocalypse Now Redux" heads Cannes screening list Friday

CANNES - Francis Ford Coppola's director's cut of "Apocalypse Now" is to head the list of the films being shown at the Cannes film festival Friday. The classic Vietnam War movie starring Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando has been restored and expanded by an extra 53 minutes. Extra elements in the three-and-a-half hour opus include romance scenes, additional footage of Playboy Playmates visiting the US troops, a speech by Colonel "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" Kilgore (Robert Duvall), more scenes on the patrol boat and extra footage of Brando. When the original version of "Apocalypse Now" first came out in 1979 it was awarded Cannes' top Palme d'Or prize. Its new, extended version, although not in competition, is one of the highlights of this year's festival.

French star Gerard Depardieu heads to Cannes for "Apocalypse Now"

CANNES - French actor Gerard Depardieu and his actress/model wife, Carole Bouquet, are expected to arrive at the Cannes film festival Friday to see Francis Ford Coppola's extended "Apocalypse Now". The Vietnam War movie, which almost cost Coppola everything he owned and star Martin Sheen his health, won at the festival when it was first presented in 1979. Coppola has now added an extra 53 minutes to the feature, and although the "redux" is not competing this year, it will be one of the most sought-after films presented.
